Why a Giving Notice Blog?
Reframing the Discussion about Workplace Unfairness
One of Freada Kapor Klein’s goals in writing Giving Notice was to reshape the discussion about workplace unfairness—shifting from a focus on litigation avoidance to the creation of equitable, respectful, and welcoming work environments. The new dialogue that was begun in Giving Notice the book will continue here in the Giving Notice Blog. Content includes:
- Entries from Freada Kapor Klein, Joan Gelfand, and Greg Humpa of the Level Playing Field Institute
- Discussion and analysis of media stories addressing any aspect of workplace unfairness and the range of its negative effects (e.g., financial, medical, psychological, societal).
- True stories from women and men whose careers, lives, families, and communities have been impacted by workplace unfairness
- Advice and solutions from Giving Notice
In many ways, Giving Notice represents the “lessons learned” by Freada during her 30 years of research, training, and consulting on workplace bias, discrimination, and harassment. The Giving Notice Blog seeks to build upon these lessons and provide a venue for other voices to enter the conversation.
Level Playing Field Institute

Fairness matters.
Work hard, get ahead. This is the way it’s supposed to happen; it just doesn’t happen this way for everyone — enough of the time. That’s the part that’s unfair. No one should have to work twice as hard to get half as far. We believe it can be different.
We envision a world where a true level playing field exists – a world where everyone has access to opportunities, including the historically disenfranchised. Racial and cultural differences would be acknowledged as positive attributes for a diverse society.
It would start in our educational system. The economic poor wouldn’t be educationally disadvantaged anymore. All talented students, regardless of socio-economic status, would be academically prepared to apply to, and graduate from, top colleges and universities.
In the workplace, individuals would go as far as their interests and capabilities would take them. This is what getting ahead should be about: no hidden barriers or obstacles and no unfair advantages. It should be about what you know, not whom you know, or where you grew up.
Level Playing Field Institute promotes innovative approaches to fairness in higher education and workplaces by removing barriers to full participation.
